Hosting - What is a subdomain?

Think of a subdomain as a domain within a domain. For example, info.yoursite.com - the first part - info - is the subdomain. Its just a folder or directory.

Why use a subdomain? Its easier to organize content on your site into a specific folder and subdomains are nothing more than that - folders. All information about your model train kits, for example, could be placed in a subdomain named - modeltrains.yoursite.com.

All hosting packages these days should allow you to create as many subdomains as you want. Creating a subdomain is done within the hosting control panel - its as simple as entering the subdomain name, then clicking a button named - create subdomain now.

As you can see, subdomains are useful for organizing content on your site, especially if your site has hundreds of pages on different subjects.

Search engines also like subdomains because it tells them exactly what that section of your website is about, and also gives you the opportunity to include extra keywords in your domain for better search engine positioning.
