Domain hosting is just like any other web hosting - you purchase a domain like yourdomain.com, then have it hosted by a web hosting company so anyone with a web browser can see your website on the Internet.

The .com in yourdomain.com is referred to as the 'top domain' or 'domain extension' - they are the same thing. There are many other domain extensions out there, from .com, .net, .org, .biz, .us and many more.
